Unforgettable portraits in Italy by Patrick Richmond NICHOLAS
The landscape within an hour’s drive of Orvieto where we are based is of such uncommon beauty that it lends itself naturally to portraiture. Gainsborough was one of the first painters to move his sitters out of the studio or drawing room and into the countryside. I photographed my Orvieto neighbours in the manner of Gainsborough in their garden.
A portrait lasts forever
What other profession offers a service as lasting as a photographic portrait? A professionally realised photograph printed with pigment inks is something to be passed on to your great great grandchildren.
Why not combine an Italian holiday with a portrait sitting? A weekend or even longer in Orvieto will give you the opportunity to explore the area, sample its delights such as the Tuscan/Umbrian cuisine and go home with a portrait printed on fine art paper.
Our area is a land of water and we can concentrate specifically on a specific genre, what I call a Water Portrait taken in, around or in front of water. Click here for more on water portraits
Location shooting in three Regions
Orvieto is on the cusp of three regions: Umbria, Tuscany and the little known Lazio, the region north of Rome. An area of lakes, rivers, woods, springs, ancient ruins, and the incomparable Mediterranean coast. The breathtaking beauty of the landscape makes for an unforgettable experience.
Make-up and Styling
this can be done in the field and is an integral part of the service
The photographic service consists of a half day near Orvieto at €250, or if you wish to travel further to one of the unique locations to be found within an hour’s drive from Orvieto in Tuscany or Latium then you will need a full day for €395
Make-up and hair €50 in an Orvieto salon
or €125 in the field where the make-up artist will also act as stylist and photographer’s assistant.
Prints are made with non fading pigment inks on Hahnemuhle textured fine-art paper which is like heavy water colour paper and not a bit like the photo paper that most people are used to. Prints can be framed with or without glass – my preference, especially for big prints, is without. That way you can see and feel the texture of the paper, and besides there are no reflections and even a large print is very light. I supply the print, the framing is up to you. Prints can be made in colour or black and white.
The print below right is 120x55cm (48×22″), without glass and has been spray fixed so it is splash proof. Prints may also be waxed or resin coated to render them completely waterproof.
I like to avoid the standard sizes for big prints such as A3 preferring long thin ones or square. Rather than using common or garden pre-cut sheets I use roll paper this means that prints come in all shapes and sizes. I often make prints up to 2m (6ft) long.
Prices of prints are extremely simple to work out: they are priced by square cm. You merely multiply the square centimetres size of the print by this guide number 80. For example a 30x40cm (12×16″) print is 1200 sq/cm – multiply that by 60 gives you €96. An A4 (10×8″) print is 600sq/cm = €48. The large vertical print in the bathroom (right) 120x55cm (47×22″) would cost €528
All the photos from the shoot will be adjusted in Lightroom and recorded on a CD at low resolution (long edge 900px – big enough to make postcard size prints at home)
Orders and Discounts
There is a minimum print order of €300. After arriving at this minimum I offer a discount of 10%.
We can arrange accommodation if you like in and around Orvieto. For example the characteristic and economical B&B La Soffitta right in the centre.
Or just outside Orvieto in an agriturismo such as Sette Piagge (a working farm, they serve their own fruit, vegetables and fish) and they have a pool. They have small self catering chalets as well as rooms.
Or a central and historic 4 star hotel like The Piccolomini in a 15th century palazzo.
Outside Orvieto there is the highly recommended 13th century monastery, now a 4 star hotel with pool, the La Badia. (below)
Whatever your tastes in accommodation we can help you with recommendations in and around Orvieto.
